London Plane (Platanus)

Introduced in the early 1660s, this incredibly tough tree was extensively planted in our capital as a street tree to filter out the smog filled air and become the lungs of London. It thrives in most soils and its only Achilles heel is excess salt caused by winter gritting or coastal conditions. It forms a large broad crown and a patchwork bark of green, white and cream from a relatively young age. Its leaves are large and Maple like and it makes a great avenue or specimen tree.
